About Canada

The Dominion of Canada was created on July 1, 1867, unifying Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Alberta became a province of Canada on September 1, 1905. The Canada Act of 1982 gave Canada its independence and a Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Canada is the second largest country in the world with 33 million inhabitants and almost 10 million square kilometres of land. Canada has the world’s largest coastline, the world’s largest surface area of freshwater, and an immensely diverse landscape including mountain ranges, plains, forests, and cold tundra. Welcoming approximately 200,000 immigrants a year, Canada is a multicultural nation that values diversity and equality. In 1988 we became the first in the world to create a Multiculturalism act to ensure that all Canadians are equal, no matter what their heritage.
